History

The theatre was founded in 1971 when a group of graduate students at the University of Hawai`i, noted that there were no theatres in Hawai`i devoted to telling the story of this place and her various cultures.  4 decades later, Kumu Kahua proudly gives voice to all people of Hawai`i by developing her playwrights and bringing stories of her people to the stage for the broad community to participate in and observe.  This is the only theatre we know of in the world devoted solely to this mission.
