Actors’ Workshop at Maui Arts & Cultural Center

WHAT: Edward Sakamoto’s Fishing for Wives and Actors’ Workshop travel to Maui

WHERE: Maui Arts & Cultural Center

WHEN: Production - Mar 22 and 23, 2013, 7:30 pm
Class - Mar 23, 2013, 3:00 pm

INFO: On O’ahu: KumuKahuaTheatre@hawaiiantel.net, 808-536-4222
On Maui: MauiArts.org, 808-242-SHOW (7469)
Class Only: workshop@mauiarts.org

After a sold-out run at Kumu Kahua Theatre, the cast and crew of Edward Sakamoto’s Fishing for Wives will take the show to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on March 22nd and 23rd for two shows only.

Continuing their commitment to a Local Voices Series, each year the MACC invites Kumu Kahua Theatre to bring a “local” theatrical piece to Maui. The original cast of the popular show, which premiered at Kumu Kahua Theatre in November 2012, will appear at the MACC. On O‘ahu, the November run of the show was the world premiere. Nearly every performance of the show was sold out.

Performances are at 7:30 pm in the McCoy Studio Theatre. For tickets, call 808-242-SHOW (7469), or visit MauiArts.org.

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center is devoted to being a gathering place where the community can celebrate creativity in personal and shared experiences of the arts.

Kumu Kahua Theatre is devoted to telling the stories of Hawai‘i, and developing her playwrights, artists and audiences.

On Saturday, March 23, at 3 pm in McCoy Studio Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Kumu Kahua Theatre of O‘ahu will present a FREE opportunity for actors to hone their character development skills in a workshop environment…

The Monologue

During skilled delivery of a monologue, an actor communicates an encapsulation of all that he is, wants and fears. During a not so “on” delivery, the actor communicates lines… and possibly the actor’s desire to communicate. This makes the monologues itself – any monologue – an excellent tool for actors’ instruction.

Visiting Maui with performances of the show Fishing for Wives from Kumu Kahua Theatre, Kumu Kahua Managing Director, award winning actor and director, Donna Blanchard; and Mid-Pacific Institute School for the Arts Educator, director and playwright, John Wat will present The Monologue Workshop for Maui theatre artists.

The workshop is open to anyone. We request that you bring a prepared, memorized, 2-3 minute monologue to work on, though you may use a script if necessary. If you do not have a monologue, you’ll be given material to work with.

At the workshop you will receive assistance meeting your level of experience/education, including character, motivation and relationship development.

There is no charge for this class.

To register, email: workshop@mauiarts.org by 5 pm on Friday, March 22.

The universe is conspiring to support Kumu Kahua Theatre. By coincidence or synchronicity, the next two shows at this one-of-a-kind theatre are perfectly timed with two landmark local events spotlighting the same subject matter of each.

In January and February, Kumu Kahua Theatre will run the world premier of A Cage of Fireflies. Three elderly sisters of the kibei generation — sent as children to be raised in Okinawa, then returned to live and work in Hawai‘i — are at the heart of this play by Daniel Akiyama.

At the same time, UH Mānoa Library and the Center for Okinawan Studies will be co-sponsoring a series of events in relation to the library’s Okinawa Collection, including a lecture, symposium and ongoing exhibit (more info here).

In March and April, Kumu Kahua Theatre will mount the world premier of Mona Z. Smiths All That Remains. In this sweeping epic of World War II, the ghosts of 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442d Regimental Combat Team soldiers return. Telling a story of loyalty and betrayal, courage and cowardice, they re-create an act of violence that torments both the living and the dead.

Also in March and January, the Bishop Museum will host the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Japanese-American World War II Veterans. The Museum has been selected as one of seven museums in the country to host the Congressional Gold Medal awarded in 2011 to Japanese-American, or Nisei, World War II veterans in recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments (more information here).

The staff at Kumu Kahua Theatre are working with representatives of the University, museum and the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team to create joint opportunities to experience these historical events across multiple platforms.

Coincidence? Synchronicity? Call it what you will, it looks like providence – these events coincide and the little theatre that could, IS!
