All new free playwriting class taught by Lee A. Tonouchi, Da Pidgin Guerrilla.
This class will take place online, via Zoom
6 Consecutive Sundays June 9 - July 21. 8:00am - 11:00am.
(*because of the holiday weekend, there will be no class on Sunday, July 7th)
Course Description:
Playwriting, Guerrilla Style! In da vein of Miyagi-do karate, dis going be one unorthodox kine playwriting class. We not going emphasize da technical aspects of writing plays, but rather we going focus on our innate human ability for tell stories and see if we can translate that into script form.
Dis course is designed for writers with some experience, but NOT with a finished script. Da goal of da class is for turn your idea into da beginnings of one full-length play. You going be asked for write, re-write. re-re-rewrite, share your writing, read, read aloud, give feedbacks and participate in class discussions. Da class stay open to anybody who like chance 'em.
Requirements:
You must submit either your one-page pitch about da play you wanna write or your first scene in your play you hope for expand. DO NOT submit one sample for something you already finished one full-length play for. Dis class stay designed for help those who wanna expand their idea into something longer. Please submit your pitch or writing sample in advance by May 31 to be considered.
Class size stay limited so only da students with da most promising pitches or samples going be selected for dis class.
Must have internet connectivity as da class going be conducted online using Zoom.
Students can be of any age. Knowing how for write Pidgin stay optional. You no need be from Hawai‘i for sign up.
Lee A. Tonouchi a.k.a. Da Pidgin Guerrilla taught one college-level creative writing class for several years. He also stay one award-winning Pidgin playwright and author. His plays Gone Feeshing, Living Pidgin, Da Kine Space, Echoes of Dat Red Guitar, and UchinaAloha wuz produce by Kumu Kahua Theatre. Palikū Theatre did his Oriental Faddah and Son. Da Honolulu Theatre for Youth wen go do his youth play Three Year Swim Club. An'den da East West Players did da adult version which wuz one Los Angeles Times Critic's Choice Selection.
Lee A. Tonouchi a.k.a. "Da Pidgin Guerrilla" is one Pidgin writer. He had several plays produced by Kumu Kahua Theatre. Dey include Gone Feeshing, Living Pidgin, Da Kine Space, Echoes of Dat Red Guitar, and UchinaAloha. His play Oriental Faddah and Son ran at Paliku Theatre. HTY wen go do his youth play Three Year Swim Club. An'den da East West Players did da adult version which wuz one Los Angeles Times Critic's Choice Selection. Lee get several award-winning Pidgin books too and his next one stay da collection, Chiburu: Anthology of Hawai'i Okinawan Literature das coming out soon. Most recently he da recipient of da 2021-2022 Tony Quagliano Poetry Award and da 2023 American Association for Applied Linguistics Distinguished Public Service Award for his work in raising public awareness of important language-related issues and promoting linguistic social justice.
